Words You Won't Find In The Entire Tumblr Codebase

Factory.
In other news, the longest variable name in the Tumblr codebase is still shorter than the shortest variable name in a language named after a beverage made by a company named after a celestial body…
HD Sucks
goldenrat1o:
elbles:
Pros:
Potentially improved picture quality (“potentially” due to insane compression ratios due to people demanding more and more HD channels with a given amount of bandwidth)
Cons:
General need for cable boxes, CableCARDs, and/or tuning adapters for HD versions of SD channels that require nothing but a cable-ready TV
Despite “separable security” in the form of...

Android Apps Hit 20,000 →
…while the iPhone app store is upwards of 100,000, the vast majority of which are either absolute garbage, or fancy wrappers around web sites. Many iPhone fanboys tout this figure as a sign of the iPhone’s “superiority,” but the Mac has proven that it really isn’t quantity, but quality. I don’t want ten mediocre IM apps, I need Adium. I don’t care if a...
CrackBerries
I get it now. I really do. BlackBerries aren’t as flashy as iPhones, and they don’t do media as well, though they still function quite well as a music player (anecdotally, my new-ish Apple in-ear headphones work better with my Tour than my first-generation iPod Touch, on account of the remote actually doing something useful). But they sure as hell do so many other things better than...
iPhone Just Now Passing Windows Mobile??? →
This seems hard to believe, but I’ll have to take their word for it, and yes, I realize it reflects the total installed base and that Windows Mobile had years of a head start on the iPhone (the Newton notwithstanding). Coincidentally, I just retired my trusty Windows Mobile phone (said without a hint of sarcasm, a true rarity for me) for a BlackBerry Tour, which of course meant BIS went down...
Giving New Meaning To "Parents' Basement" →
This is something like a parents’ basement, of sorts, I suppose. Thoughts of Kevin Smith’s “command center” are creeping into my head…
The Best Pizza in the World is Found in New Haven,... →
I work about half a mile from this place called Sally’s, apparently. I will have to try it some time and see if it’s truly as good as advertised. And for what it’s worth, I must agree with the assertion that the best pizza in America is found in the northeastern portion of the country. And I’ve never had any pizza that could even be considered average anywhere south of the...
Tiger Woods: Before and After →
At first, I hated all the media coverage this supposed “athlete” was getting for doing nothing more than acting like your typical jackass. I still hate it. But it’s certainly been great comedic fodder. Because of that, I can somewhat tolerate ESPN being on TigerWatch 24/7 and giving ten minutes of coverage to hockey (between the hours of 2 AM and 3 AM, of course).
Student loans make me cry.

student loans are no joke.
student loans suck… and will suck for the next few years
Not only that, but I feel it is all wasted money. I definitely did not get my money’s worth. I should have known that going where I did would end with that result.
:(
Seconded. I’d tell anyone thinking about going to college for...

More BCS BS
So, Texas barely beats a Nebraska team that is talented on defense—courtesy of SEC defensive mind Bo Pelini—but nowhere near as talented as Alabama’s, and they (Texas) are still somehow the leading candidate to play Alabama in the national championship game? Never mind that Alabama’s offense put up monster numbers on one of the nation’s best defenses, and limited one of the...
Thanks Paul Holmgren... →
…because if you hadn’t done this, my ability to continue to watch Flyers games would have likely been impeded by a stroke, which would have been caused by continuing to watch a Flyers team that’s loaded with talent, but has the self-discipline and direction of a two-year-old. Had I known Paul had been looking for a coach, I would have gladly volunteered myself. In the meantime, I...
The Cable Company Cycle →
A commenter on Ars Technica suggests that cable companies provide decryption devices at or before the demarc of a house, so that all channels the homeowner has paid for are available to all TVs with a Clear QAM tuner. This reminded me of when I was about six or seven (‘91 or ‘92, roughly), and the cable company did exactly that, albeit minus the whole HD thing. We had a descrambler...
iPhone Remote Control →
I was wondering how long it would take for something like this to come out. It’s a pretty good idea, although I’d rather have an IR emitter plugged directly into the iPhone/iTouch instead of having to use Wifi as a proxy of sorts. That said, I’d still recommend a good universal remote instead of this (mine will have to be pried from my cold, lifeless fingers, despite its size).
Iverson Returns To Philly →
Philadelphia’s favorite form of cancer has returned in the form of number 3. I grew up as a huge fan of the Sixers and Iverson, but as time went on, I lost a tremendous amount of respect for him as a person, and as a team player. He’s one of—if not the most—exciting basketball players I’ve ever watched, but this will hurt the team far more than it will help them. It’s...
