The Grammy's: Nails on a Chalkboard
I just so happened to overhear a version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” from another room in the house, so naturally, I put it on to see who was singing, and if they were any good. And there I saw it: Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks singing that song. Stevie Nicks could sing that song better long after she’s dead than that talentless Taylor Swift could do in her...

Everyone's Got Something Scarce... →
While the Middle East has control over a lot of oil, we (the United States) certainly seem to have a lot of control over IP address allocations. It’d be interesting to see if IP address allocations ever take a foothold in global politics and relations. As silly as it sounds, who would have thought oil would have done the same thing 100 years ago? And yes, I know about IPv6. I wouldn’t...

The Funny Thing About Elections
In seeing all the coverage about the Massachusetts election tonight, something occurred to me. Our founding fathers, in their infinite wisdom, created the US as a representative democracy. I can remember sitting in middle school hearing that and thinking, why don’t we have a direct democracy, with the people truly running the country? It was later that I learned the answer to that question,...

I've Joined A Team
I’m a proud member of Team “I Don’t Give A Shit.” I don’t care about “Coco” or Leno, because honestly, neither of them are that funny. Plus, I have to deduct points from Conan because anyone with that kind of money who continues to drive an old Taurus SHO has got to be just as insane as his hair would suggest. Seriously though, I don’t get all the...

When Genesis Can Be A Bad Thing
In doing the due diligence that any buyer of a new sporty car would do, I took a test drive in a Hyundai Genesis Coupe today. As I was heading out the door to take it for a spin, the salesman said to me, “don’t have too much fun in it.” Unfortunately for him, that wasn’t much of a challenge for me. It wasn’t a boring car, but it was disappointing to see one of the few...

goldenrat1o: livesophia: Quietly and calmly open up your laptop case. Remove your laptop. Start it up. Make sure the fellow traveller who is annoying you can see the screen. Close your eyes and tilt your head up to the sky and move your lips like you are praying. Then click here. LOL That’s terrible, and you may not ever be able to fly again, and you’ll make restrictions EVEN WORSE for...

Resistance to Change
When I bought my first car nearly eight years ago, it was a rear-wheel-drive car with a manual transmission. Shortly after buying it, I said I would never own a car that wasn’t a rear-wheel-drive car with a real (i.e., with a third pedal) manual transmission. A little less than four years, an impromptu front brake job (pads and rotors) in an Advance Auto Parts parking lot, and a tie-rod end...

How to wash dishes in an office
marco: Stack as many dishes, glasses, and mugs in the sink as you can get to fit in it. Be sure to include as much leftover food as possible, especially if it came from the ocean. There should be no more than 1 inch of clearance between the top of the stack and the faucet’s opening. Saturate the sponge, then hide it somewhere in the middle of the stack. Pour coffee over the stack.

I Hate The Cowgirls
They’re good, but they’re nowhere near as good as the Eagles’ terrible defensive game is making them look. Oh, and apparently, Sean McDermott is continuing the Jim Johnson tradition of never adjusting a defensive scheme during a game, even when they’re getting routinely burned. The good old “oh, it’ll eventually work” mentality, really. More often than...

The Tivo/Jabber Connection
We have two Tivos here, and both maintain persistent connections to tivochat1.tivo.com on TCP port 5223, which is usually used for encrypted connections between Jabber clients and servers (and given the hostname, this makes sense). I’m just curious as to what the hell they’re doing with this connection. Maybe for getting the Tivos notifications about recordings scheduled online? Maybe...
