It Must Be Nice to Be Verizon
Interesting article not as much in support of AT&T, but in contradiction to everyone (including me) saying “Verizon’s network is best”.
I’m not so sure the article is suggesting that Verizon’s network is not the best, but that their practices are just the same as AT&T’s, which I would agree with. Coverage issues aside, this is how I view the three major US carriers:
- AT&T: We have the iPhone. Enough said. Until Apple gives it to another US carrier.
- Sprint: We’re cheap, and our data service is pretty damn good. Possibly more reliable than Verizon’s, based upon a recent study.
- Verizon: Hmm, coverage issues aside… You get what you pay for?
In my book, it’s a question which is the least of three evils. They all suck in their own unique ways, and you’re always going to have to compromise on something. If you want an iPhone, well, you know you’re probably going to compromise on coverage and reliability (in the US, anyway). If you want coverage and the best reliability, well, no iPhone for you.
For what it’s worth, I did suggest that Sprint and Verizon could quite possibly have issues with the increased data usage a CDMA iPhone would bring in a prior post, but it’s really a moot point at the moment, though I’d love to see such a competition come to fruition.
Anyway, glad that the iPhone is working out for you in terms of coverage. Let me know how it works in NY, when you make it up this way again. You know, just in case Apple decides to make an iPhone with a physical keyboard, just for me…
I can only speak for myself, but living in a major metropolitan area in Virginia, I have not yet had any major issues with AT&T, and to my recollection no dropped calls in the month or so I’ve had the iPhone.
Coverage certainly isn’t as ubiquitous as Verizon’s (as my wife found out on her way out of town today), but where there is coverage, it’s usually pretty good.
Even in Washington DC (on Saturday and Sunday), the network was not nearly as bogged down as I expected.
I’m still not the largest AT&T fan, but perhaps they’re not as bad as people say?
Ask me what I think after I visit NYC…
