GMail Push for iPhone is here! Sorta.
This is a service that (apparently) uses IMAP IDLE to get notifications of new messages, and then proxies those notifications to a fake Exchange account. Your iPhone is set up to use this Exchange account, and thus get the push notification.
This is clever, and I’d be totally into it, excepting that the iPhone only supports one exchange account at a time. That one account is my work account, as I’m sure it is for many people.
Sounds like I’m back to waiting on GPush. Which is to say, I’m not getting GMail push… ever.
Yawn. Wake me up when someone releases a third-party mail program for the iPhone that supports IMAP IDLE without having to resort to acting as an intermediary between an IMAP server and an iPhone. I don’t think you’ll be waking me up anytime soon…
To be fair, mobile Outlook doesn’t support IMAP IDLE either, though at least on Windows Mobile, you can get a third-party application that does support it. And the Pre seems to support it out-of-the-box. Just so you know… :-)
