Doing some memory use analyzation using Apple’s runtime profiler, Instruments.
Even their damned profiler looks good. If they put this much care into the tools developers use, can you imagine how much care they put into the rest of the OS? Into their first-party applications?
App Store issues and other faux pas aside, Apple really does make good stuff.
Apple does indeed make some great stuff, but don’t forget that Instruments is built on the work of Sun’s DTrace. Apple did a lot of work into porting it from Solaris/OpenSolaris, and creating a wonderful GUI for it, but it all started off with Sun.
That said, while at VT, our Linux/UNIX Users’ Group co-hosted a Sun presentation on Solaris and DTrace. Curiously, when it came to demoing DTrace, they actually did it on OS X. :-)
