Ken Thompson (one of the co-writers of the original UNIX, along with Dennis Ritchie) discusses the implications of relying only on source code security audits, when a compiler could be written such that it could automatically insert backdoors into code as it compiles, even if it is compiling itself. This was back in 1984. The year, not the book. :-)
