A Comparison
Advantages to working at home
- No need for headphones
- Less distractions
- Unshared connection to the Internet
- Ridiculous posture is acceptable
- Bodily functions of all kinds can be taken care of at will
Another huge advantage: You commute from your bedroom to your desk. I don’t mind a commute in a car—in fact, I even welcome one, as long as it’s no more than 40-45 minutes or so one-way. Any more than that, and yeah, telecommuting becomes the option of choice (for me, anyway).
Disadvantages of working at home
- No face-to-face contact
- No distinction between work and home
- Disconnected feeling
- Missing out on the “intangibles”
Every once in a while, it’s a nice change of pace, though.
Agreed, as I certainly wouldn’t want to do it all the time. I did it all of last summer (save for two days), and it definitely started to feel like cabin fever.
