This new ad from AT&T proves their ineptness. They knew their network had the ability for their phones to carry voice and data traffic simultaneously for years and Verizon’s and Sprint’s networks/phones could not, and never touted or advertised the feature in any major way because:

  1. They didn’t believe many people would be interested in it
  2. Their marketing people were idiots
  3. It took Verizon advertisements for them to realize they actually had an advantage Verizon didn’t have
  4. All of the above

The only occasion where I’ve run into the problem of not having voice and data at the same time is on drives where I have Google Maps open, and I make or receive a call, but that doesn’t happen frequently (once or twice over the past two years I’ve had a smartphone). Anyway, it’s not a big deal for me, and it certainly wouldn’t play much of a role in choosing a phone or network. Would it for you?
