Home Routers with Faster Internet Connections
One of the more interesting Ask Slashdot questions I’ve seen in a while. The Linksys routers are pretty good, especially loaded up with DD-WRT, but I’ve found they still aren’t quite as capable as an old Linux box loaded up with NICs. I ran Linksys routers with DD-WRT at each of my college apartments, and they all needed to be reset on occasion, and I’m sure they couldn’t handle the faster home connections, such as FIOS.
My current router (a Celeron running at 366 MHz with 64 MB of RAM) has three 100 megabit NICs, and can shuffle traffic across all three at near wire speed (I use Linksys routers running DD-WRT purely as access points). Plus, it’s been up-and-running for well over 900 days now without issues or a reboot. If you’re a geek, it’s the only way to go. Use OpenBSD if you’re looking for bonus points, hah.
