CrackBerries

I get it now. I really do. BlackBerries aren’t as flashy as iPhones, and they don’t do media as well, though they still function quite well as a music player (anecdotally, my new-ish Apple in-ear headphones work better with my Tour than my first-generation iPod Touch, on account of the remote actually doing something useful). But they sure as hell do so many other things better than most anything else out there.

My Tour has outstanding call quality, beating out my Q9c, and it even seems to work better with my Bluetooth headset. The voice recognition engine is one familiar to me (same as the one Motorola threw in the Q, and one Samsung has used for years), and it too is excellent. And while I had my qualms about handing over my e-mail password to RIM (and I still do, honestly), the push e-mail via BIS is drool worthy. The Google Voice application works wonderfully, as does Google Maps, with full Latitude support in the background, without being much of a discernible drain on battery life. Oh, and Microsoft’s Bing does one thing on my BlackBerry even better than it did on my Windows Mobile phone, ironically enough: It automatically bases its selections on your current location (awesome).

My dad had mentioned to me a week or two ago that someone had told him that there are iPhone users, and that there are BlackBerry users, and that you’ll never convince one side to switch to the other. I agree completely, and I know which side I’m on.
